Transforming Negative Perceptions of Aging in the Chinese Community:
The Importance of Education and Personal Growth for Seniors
 16:36

Alex Fok

Abstract:   Many older adults in the Chinese community hold the belief that once a person reaches their golden age, their life is effectively over, and they become a burden on their family and the community. This negative perception of aging can lead to depression and despair, and can cause some seniors to give up on themselves and become isolated. To address this problem, it is important to find ways to help seniors maintain a positive and forward-thinking outlook on aging; and to enjoy their golden age with a sense of fulfillment and purpose. One approach to accomplish this is by providing education and opportunities for personal growth. Continue education can benefit seniors, their families, and society as a whole by promoting cultural literacy, spiritual enrichment, mental balance, improved physical health, inter-generation relationships, social progress, and material prosperity. These programs can also help seniors adapt to changes in their own lives and the broader social environment.

Dr. Jason Kwok

Abstract:   Type II diabetes, which is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body not effectively using insulin, can be controlled and even reversed, with patients entering a state of "remission". Studies have shown that some Type II diabetes patients can have normal insulin production and usage through appropriate guidance, healthy lifestyle changes and treatment, even after stopping medication. Dr. Jason Kwok

Abstract:   Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, making them more vulnerable to fractures, particularly in the hip, wrist, spine, and shoulder. Early detection is crucial to prevent fractures, and a risk assessment questionnaire can help identify potential risks. Osteoporosis Canada recommends people over 50 with risk factors consult their doctor for a lumbar X-ray. Additionally, frequent falls can lead to fractures, and those who have fallen or have difficulty balancing should take measures to prevent falls. These assessments can prevent the onset of osteoporosis or diagnose it early, leading to effective prevention of fractures.
