Julia Wong & Friends

Julia Wong & Friends – An Introduction

It all began in the Lunar New Year of 2000 when a group of civic-minded Chinese volunteers, under the name of Julia Wong & Friends, vowed to serve the seniors in nursing homes and senior centres in the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and Markham through Chinese opera, song, tai chi and dance performances. The volunteers also brought gifts to the seniors to show their respect and concern.

These performances have proved popular among senior audiences and also have helped channeled the art of traditional Chinese performance to non-Chinese communities.

In 2001, the group adopted its Chinese name 閨秀愛心 . Involvements in serving the senior population have become more extensive. Julia Wong played a significant role in fundraising campaigns of the Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church through Chinese opera performances. Over the past years, the volunteers helped with the fundraising exercises of Mon Sheong, Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, Carefirst, Red Cross, Cherish, St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre, S.E.A.S. Centre, Under the Banyan Tree and many other charity organizations.

"Alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much."
